Why Do Straight Lines Look Wavy or Bent?

Do the edges of a doorframe appear bent? Do lines of text seem uneven, or do tiles look wavy when they should be straight? This type of visual distortion is sometimes called metamorphopsia. It often affects central vision and may be more noticeable in one eye.

Wavy vision is a symptom, not a diagnosis. It can develop from conditions affecting the macula—the central retina used for reading, recognising faces and seeing fine detail. New or worsening distortion should be assessed promptly.[1]

What Might Wavy or Distorted Vision Feel Like?

People describe central-vision distortion in different ways. You may notice:

  • Straight lines appearing wavy, bowed, crooked or broken
  • Printed words looking crowded, stretched or partly missing
  • Faces appearing uneven or distorted
  • A blurred, grey, dark or blank patch near the centre of vision
  • Objects appearing slightly different in size between the two eyes
  • Difficulty reading, threading a needle or recognising fine details

One eye may compensate for the other, making the change difficult to notice with both eyes open. Distortion may develop slowly or appear suddenly.

Why Can Straight Lines Look Wavy?

Several eye conditions can alter the smooth structure of the macula or affect the way it processes detail. Possible categories include:

Age-related macular degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) affects central vision and becomes more common after age 55. Later AMD may cause straight lines to look wavy or crooked, central blur, blank areas or reduced colour brightness. Smoking and a family history can increase risk.[2]

Macular pucker or epiretinal membrane

A thin membrane can form on the macula and contract, creating retinal wrinkles. Text or straight edges may look bent, often more in one eye. Many cases are mild, but symptoms can interfere with daily tasks.[3]

Vitreomacular traction or a macular hole

The clear gel inside the eye changes with age. If it pulls on the macula, or a small opening develops there, distortion or a missing central spot may result.

Swelling or fluid in the retina

Diabetes, retinal blood-vessel problems, inflammation and other conditions can cause fluid to collect near the macula. People with diabetes may also find the hospital’s guide to diabetes-related retinal changes useful.

Dry eye, corneal irregularity or an unsuitable spectacle prescription can sometimes make vision fluctuate. However, persistent bending of lines—especially in one eye—should not automatically be blamed on dryness or glasses.

What Can You Safely Do Before the Examination?

  1. Check each eye separately. In good light, cover one eye without pressing it and look at a familiar straight edge or printed grid. Repeat with the other eye.
  2. Note when it began. Record whether the change was sudden or gradual and whether it is worsening.
  3. Use an Amsler grid only as instructed. If an eye professional has given you a grid for monitoring, follow their directions and report any new wavy, dark, blank or blurred area promptly.[4]
  4. Avoid driving if vision is unreliable. Central distortion can affect reading signs, judging detail and recognising hazards.
  5. Continue prescribed medicines. Do not stop diabetes, blood-pressure or other treatment without speaking to your clinician.
  6. Do not self-treat. Avoid unprescribed eye drops, eye vitamins, rose water, honey or herbal liquids. Supplements appropriate for one AMD stage may not suit another person.

A home check can help describe the symptom, but it cannot identify the cause or replace a dilated retinal examination.

When Is Wavy Vision Urgent?

Contact an eye-care professional urgently if:

  • Straight lines suddenly become wavy or bent
  • A new dark, grey, blurred or blank patch appears in central vision
  • Central vision worsens noticeably over hours or days
  • Reading or recognising faces suddenly becomes difficult

Seek immediate ophthalmic or emergency medical care for sudden major vision loss, a dark curtain or shadow, new flashes with many floaters, significant eye injury, or a red and painful eye. These symptoms can indicate a different emergency. The hospital’s guide to floaters, flashes and retinal warning signs provides further context.[5]

How Will the Eye Be Examined?

The ophthalmologist will ask about onset, affected eyes, diabetes, blood pressure, previous eye surgery, injury and medicines. A comprehensive eye examination may include:

  • Vision testing in each eye separately
  • Checking spectacle power and the front surface of the eye
  • A grid or central-vision assessment
  • A dilated examination of the retina and macula
  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT) or other retinal imaging when clinically indicated and available

These findings help distinguish a macular problem from corneal, lens or spectacle-related causes. Tests depend on the symptoms, findings and available facilities.

What Treatment Categories May Be Considered?

Treatment depends entirely on the cause and its effect on vision. Categories may include:

  • Observation and monitoring for mild, stable conditions that are not limiting daily activities
  • Updated spectacle correction when refractive error contributes to blur, although glasses cannot flatten a distorted retina
  • Clinician-directed retinal treatment, such as injections or other procedures, for selected conditions involving abnormal blood vessels or retinal fluid
  • Retinal surgery for certain cases of macular pucker, traction or macular hole when the expected benefit justifies the risks
  • Low-vision support when central vision loss is lasting and affects everyday tasks

No single treatment applies to everyone. Some causes require prompt care, while others can be monitored safely.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do wavy lines always mean macular degeneration?

No. AMD is one possible cause, but macular pucker, traction, a macular hole, retinal swelling and some surface or focusing problems can produce similar distortion. An examination is needed to identify the cause.

2. Can new glasses correct wavy vision?

Glasses may improve blur caused by refractive error. They usually cannot correct distortion caused by structural changes in the macula, although an updated prescription may still improve overall clarity.

3. Should I check one eye at a time?

Yes. Testing each eye separately may reveal a change hidden when both eyes are open. Do not press the covered eye, and remember that a home check is not a diagnosis.

4. Can distorted central vision improve?

That depends on the cause, severity and timing of treatment. Some mild conditions remain stable without treatment; others may improve with appropriate care. No outcome can be guaranteed before examination.
